Most Chinatown tours take you to the familiar, tourist-friendly spots. Ours will show you something different – the quieter, less-polished side, where the old world still lingers.
We begin at Pagoda Street, then cross over to two of Chinatown’s most striking conserved buildings – The Majestic and The Great Southern Hotel – each with stories etched into their walls. From here, we’ll wander into areas where time seems to have slowed down. The shops, the goods on display, and even the people give you a sense of Chinatown before the makeover.
Along the way, you’ll see how the demographics and the merchandise still match each other – traditional herbal shops, household wares, and long-established businesses that have survived decades of change. You might even feel as though the uncles and aunties here have been around forever (though they’re not actually as old as they look!).
Our walk will end at Red Star Restaurant – one of the very last places in Singapore still serving dim sum from traditional pushcarts. You can choose to have lunch here for the full nostalgic experience, or head to a nearby hawker centre where the food is simple, authentic, and priced for true-blue Chinatown residents – not tourists. Either way, you’ll leave with a taste of the real Chinatown.
Meeting Point:
Chinatown MRT Station, 9am. Take Exit A, go up the escalator, and meet between the UOB and POSB teller machines (next to the restrooms).
This is Chinatown without the gloss – a glimpse into a world that’s quietly disappearing.
