Consorts, concubines, mistresses, secret lovers, and wives – all connected by love, affection… and desire. Throughout history, one truth has remained: life is rarely equal. Of them all, the wife traditionally holds the most important role – managing the household and keeping order. The others? Their duties were different, their responsibilities lighter, and for many, their role was simply to provide pleasure.
It might sound old-fashioned, but the tradition of concubines and mistresses didn’t vanish with emperors and kings – it has lingered quietly into modern times. Some affairs were closely guarded secrets; others were “open secrets” whispered about but never confronted. Singapore was no exception, and certain areas became known as discreet havens where “men of distinction” kept the women who caught their eye.
Welcome to Bukit Pasoh – today a street of beautifully conserved shophouses, but once home to many women who lived comfortably thanks to wealthy benefactors. Their success depended on mastering the delicate “Art of Affection and Care” – a skill that might seem simple, but was far from easy.
On this leisurely stroll, we’ll explore this short yet storied street, imagining what life was like for a concubine or mistress. We’ll also play with definitions – what exactly is the difference between a consort, a concubine, a mistress, a secret lover, and a wife?

Outram Park MRT Station, Exit 4 (street level, towards Dorsett Hotel), 9am, Sun, 21 Sept 2025.
End Point:
Eng Hoon Street – once another hot spot, nicknamed “Mistresses Lane”. We’ll take a bus from Bukit Pasoh Road to Eng Hoon Street, so please bring your bus card.
Expected end time is around 11.30am, possibly 12pm.
