BISHAN: KAMPONG SAN TENG WALKING TOUR
Sun, 28th Sept 2025
9am to 12pm

In the early 20th century, no one in their right mind would buy a house built on a former graveyard – let alone on a grave itself. The taboo of death and burial grounds loomed large, and such land was often avoided well into the late 1900s. Many still recall the ghost stories that once haunted Bishan, particularly tales surrounding Bishan MRT station.

So, when news broke that Kampong San Teng would be redeveloped into a new HDB estate, the announcement was met with scepticism. Some swore they would never “sleep on top of a grave”.

Yet, history had already offered an example to the contrary. In 1958, Mr. Tang Choon Keng – better known as the founder of CK Tang – proved that being near a former graveyard wasn’t necessarily bad luck. His store once stood beside a Teochew cemetery, which was later redeveloped into the illustrious Ngee Ann City. Yes – the Ngee Ann Building sits on what was once a burial ground.

Ghosts or no ghosts, Bishan today is one of Singapore’s most sought-after HDB estates. In fact, some flats here have sold for over $1 million. The kampong houses, rural scenery, and rows of graves are long gone – but the story of how Bishan transformed from taboo land to prime real estate is nothing short of remarkable.

On this walk, we’ll uncover Bishan’s history and explore how the tables turned in favour of land once considered undesirable. We’ll also discuss the future of other former cemetery sites like Bidadari and Bukit Brown. Will they follow Bishan’s path to success?

Meeting Point:
Bishan MRT Station, Exit C, 9am, Sun, 28 Sept 2025. Look for me near Toast Box – I’ll likely be having breakfast there. You’ll spot me by my Tourist Guide badge.

Expected end time: 12pm (possibly 12.30pm).

Join us for a walk that blends ghostly tales, bold developments, and a fascinating lesson in how Singapore reshapes its landscapes – and its superstitions.
