Bukit Brown is more than just a cemetery. It is a resting place for thousands, including pioneers who helped shape Singapore’s early history. Opened in 1922 and closed for burials in 1973, it became one of the largest Chinese cemeteries outside China.
Over the years, nature reclaimed much of the land, creating a sanctuary of heritage, memory, and wildlife – all quietly tucked away from the city.
This trail takes us into the deeper, less-trodden paths of Bukit Brown. Please come in proper trekking shoes and be ready for a little adventure. The reward is not just the stories we uncover, but also the atmosphere of walking through a place where history and nature meet.
One of the curiosities hidden here is a rusting Peugeot 504, together with four other abandoned cars, now almost completely swallowed by trees and vines. Forgotten by time, these vehicles have become part of the forest itself – reminders of how swiftly nature reclaims what man leaves behind.
But the main highlights are the towering “Avatar trees”, so named because they evoke the magical forests in the film. Their immense canopies and sweeping roots command attention and stir the imagination.
Standing beneath them, you cannot help but feel small – yet deeply connected to something larger. Sadly, these trees will not be here for much longer. Plans are underway for them to give way to the upcoming Bukit Brown HDB estate.
This walk is a chance to reflect – on what has been lost, what still lingers, and what will soon disappear. Bukit Brown is more than a burial ground; it is a place where heritage, memory, and nature are interwoven. By walking its paths, we remember not only those who came before us, but also the landscapes that quietly shaped their lives.
