LIM CHU KANG & THE 40 LAMPPOST WALK
Sat, 18th Oct 2025
9am to 12pm

At first glance, Lim Chu Kang Road seems like an endless stretch of nothingness. For nearly two kilometres – marked by 40 lampposts – there is little shade, and if the sun is out, you’ll feel it. But once we pass this stretch, the road transforms into one of Singapore’s most scenic heritage routes.

Few know that Lim Chu Kang Road is one of just five heritage roads in Singapore. With its wide dual carriageway framed by towering trees, it feels more like a country lane than a modern Singapore road. Beyond the asphalt lie stories of war, villages, farms, and a way of life that has almost vanished.

Not long ago, places like Ama Keng bustled with kampung life. Families farmed pigs, poultry, and vegetables, while children played freely under the trees. Today, little of that past remains visible – but the memories linger. On this walk, we’ll trace some of those forgotten stories while enjoying the tranquillity of one of Singapore’s last rustic landscapes.

📍 Meeting Point:  We’ll meet at Choa Chu Kang MRT Station, Exit A, in front of McDonald’s, at 9.00am sharp. From there, we’ll take a scenic 40-minute bus ride to Lim Chu Kang Road. Our walking route will cover about 2 to 3 km – not too long, but enough to give you a sense of the area’s history and character.

If energy allows, we’ll also explore Jalan Bahtera, a quiet road with stories of its own. Along the way, we’ll reflect on why Lt. General Yamashita, the “Tiger of Malaya”, chose to march into Singapore through Lim Chu Kang during World War II.

Like Fort Canning, Lim Chu Kang cannot be neatly boxed into one category. It is at once a story of war and defence, of farming and village life, and of Singapore’s progress and change. On this trail, we’ll let the road guide us – uncovering stories as they come, from the colonial era to present day.

This is more than just a walk; it’s a glimpse into a Singapore that feels far removed from the city. Join me for a journey through the past, across the “40 Lampposts”, and into the heritage heart of Lim Chu Kang.
