Join us for a fascinating journey through the vibrant heart of Kampong Glam. We’ll uncover the rich tapestry of Arab Street, a neighbourhood steeped in history and culture.
Meet me at 9am on Saturday, 1st November 2025, at Bugis MRT (Exit B). I’ll be easy to spot with my official Tourist Guide badge. From there, it’s just a short stroll to where our adventure begins.
This tour traces the full story of Arab Street – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Did you know this iconic area might never have existed without a historical squabble? We’ll delve into the dispute between Sir Stamford Raffles and Major General William Farquhar that led to the Raffles Town Plan, which designated this district for the Malay and Arab communities.
What began as a line on a map evolved into a thriving, colourful centre of commerce. We’ll explore how Arab Street earned its accolades, becoming a treasure trove of exotic goods. From intricate Persian carpets to enchanting Aladdin lamps, the array of wares is a sight to behold. The area’s enchanting atmosphere, reminiscent of tales from Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, truly comes alive in the evenings.
Together, we’ll discover the unique flavour of Arab Street and its enduring connection to Singapore’s story. Our walk will conclude on Beach Road, a name that hints at Singapore’s ever-changing coastline.
