Nee Soon Village is a place where history, culture, and heritage quietly linger – thought of as too far, too quiet, too sleepy. But things are changing.

The opening of Springleaf MRT has breathed new life into this once laid-back hamlet. Dozens of eateries have sprung up, eager to make their mark. Longstanding family-run shops, meanwhile, continue to hold their own. One example is Ngee Fou Ampang Yong Tau Foo, a beloved institution that has served generations. I know them well – they were, and still are, my neighbours.

Back in the 1970s, the landed homes here were so hard to sell that few believed the North would ever flourish. Half a century later, these same properties are now worth a fortune, and the newly launched Springleaf Residence is adding even more buzz to the area. How times have changed!

Join me, Uncle Chris, on a rustic walk through my old hometown, where the past and present weave together in surprising ways. We’ll gather at Springleaf MRT (Exit 2) at 9am, and by 11.30am we’ll finish back at the same station – just in time for lunch.

Highlights of this walk include:

• A look at Springleaf Residence and its fascinating blend of heritage and modern living. Incorporated into its design is the conserved building of Upper Thomson Secondary School – the first of its kind in Singapore. I was a student there from 1967 to 1970, so you’ll hear a few personal stories too.

• The history of Poi Eng Public School (today’s Peiying), which once stood in a coconut grove where Springleaf Gardens now sits.

• Tales of the shops, schools, and families that gave Nee Soon its character long before the MRT arrived.

This is a walk for those who enjoy old-world charm, personal anecdotes, and the chance to see how an overlooked corner of Singapore is transforming before our eyes. Wear comfortable shoes, bring an umbrella just in case, and be ready for a morning of discovery.
