Step into a forgotten corner of Singapore where time seems to stand still. Once part of a vast SAF (Singapore Armed Forces) training ground, the villages of Ulu Sembawang were used to the sight of soldiers passing through – and occasionally helping themselves to a rambutan or two during fruit season.
In those days, Jalan Ulu Sembawang stretched all the way to Sembawang Road, winding through landscapes that looked almost like the Cameron Highlands. Duck ponds gave the kampong its rustic charm, and vegetable farms, though simple and without modern machinery, were neat and lovingly kept.
But as Singapore moved forward, the past was cleared away to make room for the future. The farms and villages are long gone, leaving only memories. Today, Ulu Sembawang is part of the Park Connector Network (PCN). Quiet and somewhat forgotten, it now offers nature lovers a rare chance to enjoy a slower pace – especially at sunrise, when the light casts a magical glow over the trail.
On this walk, we’ll retrace the history of Ulu Sembawang while experiencing its present beauty. We’ll explore how the land has transformed, and why this peaceful trail is still worth cherishing in a city that is ever-changing.
Meeting Point: Han’s Café, next to Springleaf MRT, at 8.30am sharp.
Ending Point: Around 11.30am–12pm at Woodlands South MRT.
Please bring your bus card – we’ll be taking a short ride to Mandai Road before beginning our trail. Do wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, plus an umbrella or hat to protect yourself from the sun.
The Ulu Sembawang Sunrise Trail is more than a walk; it’s a chance to reconnect with nature, uncover forgotten stories, and witness a side of Singapore many have overlooked. Join us for a rustic Saturday morning that blends history, memory, and the beauty of the great outdoors.
