Forget the typical academic narratives; join us for a Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail that dares to tell the whole truth!
On Sunday, 14th Dec 2025, from 9am to 12pm, step beyond the polished façade and explore the gritty, fascinating history of one of Singapore’s most beloved enclaves.
Tiong Bahru is a tourist staple for a reason – it’s a story of ultimate success. But we’re lifting the curtain on its origins. This wasn’t always the neat, picturesque neighbourhood you see today. We’ll reveal the “pock marks and ruts” of its past, exploring the dramatic, often complicated, early government efforts to solve the housing crisis of yesteryear. You’ll discover how things didn’t always go to plan, ultimately leading to the “fairy tale ending” we enjoy now.
The star of this conserved enclave is undoubtedly its pre-war architecture, a dazzling example of Streamline Moderne – a late, sleek iteration of the Art Deco movement. Built by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) in the 1930s, these low-rise flats were visionary for their time, inspired by the speed and glamour of modern transport like ocean liners, trains, and automobiles.
Look closely and you will spot the tell-tale signs: smooth, curved corners, long horizontal lines, and the distinctive cantilevered balconies and flat rooftops that give the blocks an aerodynamic, futuristic feel.
We’ll point out the functional features that make these buildings perfectly adapted for the tropical climate, such as the open five-foot ways adapted from traditional shophouses, and the essential, space-saving spiral staircases.
Learn why this area earned the colloquial nickname ‘Mei Ren Wu’ (Den of Beauties) and how the original master plan fostered a unique, close-knit community spirit that endures today.
Walk down Eng Hoon Street, once infamously known as “Mistress Lane,” and see how this historic road is being reinvented, with part of it recently pedestrianised.
Tiong Bahru is fortunate that a large section, complete with its iconic architecture, has been conserved. But a vital question hangs in the balance: Will the distinctive blocks 18 to 28 along Tiong Bahru Road be saved? These buildings serve as a crucial, nostalgic entry point to the entire area. Their preservation is key to maintaining the old-world charm that locals and tourists adore. Join us to celebrate this heritage while we still can!
This is an insider’s story you won’t hear anywhere else.
