You would be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Fuyong Estate. Not many have. In fact, it might just be one of Singapore’s best-kept secrets. Even your ole Uncle Chris only discovered it after being invited for a visit – and what a discovery it was!
Fuyong Estate sits quietly just behind The Rail Mall, in the heart of Bukit Timah, a location that many would call prime. With Hillview MRT Station barely five minutes away on foot, this peaceful neighbourhood offers the kind of convenience city dwellers dream of. Back in the day, you could buy a landed property here for under a million dollars – a bargain by Bukit Timah standards. But, as with all good things, there’s a catch: the lease, which began in 1947, is running out fast.
Yet, Fuyong’s charm is timeless. Step inside and you’ll feel as though you’ve travelled back decades. The air is different – quieter, gentler, laced with nostalgia. Surrounded by nature from nearby parks and greenery, life here unfolds at a slower, more graceful pace. It’s a slice of Singapore that feels almost forgotten, yet wonderfully alive.
And just steps away lies The Rail Mall, a landmark rich in history. Originally part of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway corridor, the stretch was built in the early 1900s to serve trains travelling between Singapore and Malaysia. When the railway ceased operations in 2011, the area was transformed into a quaint lifestyle enclave – but traces of its past still linger.
The long, low buildings that line The Rail Mall echo the shape of old train carriages, while murals along the walls pay homage to the golden age of rail travel. Today, it’s a charming blend of old and new – where cafés, bakeries, and boutiques coexist with the ghosts of steam engines and stationmasters.
Meet me at Toast Box (at The Rail Mall) at 9am, Sun, 21st Dec 2025. Together with some of the residents of Fuyong Estate, your ole Uncle Chris will take you on a gentle morning walk – a true Road Less Travelled, filled with stories, history, and old-world grace.
