BEACH ROAD HERITAGE WALK
Sun, 17th Aug 2025
9am to 11.30am

Join us for a refreshing Sunday stroll as we uncover the hidden history of Beach Road – once part of Singapore’s exclusive European Town.

In colonial days, Beach Road was a place the average Asian working class wouldn’t dream of living. Under Raffles’ Town Plan, communities were neatly divided by ethnicity – with Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India reserved for Asians. Beach Road, by contrast, was lined with just 20 luxurious colonial homes reserved for the wealthy elite, with the sea lapping right up to their doorsteps.

Back then, this was true beachfront living – a world apart from the bustle of the Singapore River. The first cinemas in Singapore opened here, built to entertain the rich and fashionable who called this area home.

Today, that shoreline has long disappeared under layers of reclaimed land, and Beach Road looks very different. But if you look closely, traces of its glamorous past remain – hidden in the architecture, tucked between modern buildings, and whispered through lesser-known stories.

On this heritage walk, we’ll take a scenic route along what was once the beachfront, tracing Singapore’s transformation from the arrival of our forefathers to the modern day. We’ll explore the little-known corners of Beach Road that reveal a deeper, richer history – far beyond the office towers and traffic.

This is not just a walk through space, but through time – from colonial grandeur to wartime resilience, and from forgotten cinemas to modern change.
