Step back in time and uncover the fascinating history of Beach Road, once the heart of Singapore’s elegant European Town. In the 1800s, this was where the wealthy lived in grand colonial homes overlooking the sea ‒ yes, the beach once reached right up to Beach Road itself!
Under Raffles’ Town Plan, the city was divided along ethnic lines. While Chinatown, Kampong Glam, and Little India bustled with working-class communities, Beach Road was reserved for the privileged few. Only about twenty lavish seaside residences lined this stretch, a world apart from the busy trade and toil along the Singapore River.
As the decades passed, the shoreline receded and the area transformed. The grand homes made way for cinemas, hotels, and shophouses that drew the city’s elite. Though the beach has long vanished, the spirit of its past lingers between the streets and façades ‒ if you know where to look.
Join us for a scenic and insightful heritage walk along this former coastline. Together, we’ll trace the evolution of Beach Road and North Bridge Road, discovering hidden stories that connect Singapore’s colonial beginnings with its modern skyline.
Our walk begins at City Hall MRT Station (Exit B). Take the escalator up and meet us outside Paris Baguette at 9.00am sharp. From there, we’ll explore the historic stretch, uncovering landmarks and tales from a time when this was the place to see and be seen.
Depending on the group’s pace and energy, we’ll conclude our walk at either Golden Mile or Crawford Street. Expect an invigorating morning of history, architecture, and discovery ‒ and a new appreciation for a road that has witnessed Singapore’s transformation from sandy shores to shimmering skyscrapers.
Come ready to walk, learn, and be surprised by what lies beneath the familiar streets of Beach Road!
