Discover the fascinating transformation of Bishan from a once-feared graveyard to a thriving community! Join us on this unique walking tour as we delve into the rich history of Bishan, formerly known as Kampong San Teng.
In the early 20th century, the thought of living atop a former graveyard was unthinkable. Yet, despite the ghost stories and superstitions that surrounded Bishan, everything changed with time.
When plans to develop Kampong San Teng into Bishan HDB Estate emerged, many were sceptical, vowing never to “sleep on top of a grave”. However, visionary pioneers like Mr. Tan Choon Keng, who built his success next to a former Teochew graveyard (now the illustrious Ngee Ann City), showed that prosperity could rise from such unlikely origins.
Today, Bishan stands as one of the most sought-after residential areas in Singapore, with some HDB flats fetching over $1 million. The rural landscape of villages and graveyards has given way to modern urban living, but the area’s intriguing past remains.
Join us as we explore Bishan’s incredible journey and its transformation from superstition to success. Our tour will take you through the heritage and history of this vibrant district, drawing parallels with other areas like Bidadari and Bukit Brown, which are set to follow in Bishan’s footsteps.
