Step off the beaten path and discover the fascinating stories behind one of Singapore’s oldest Teochew enclaves – Hougang, or “Au Kang” as it was once called.
The Chinese in Singapore are often grouped into three main dialect communities – Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese. On this special walk, we’ll turn the spotlight on the Teochews: once regarded as one of the more refined groups in early Singapore. Are they still the same today? Join us to find out as we explore their heritage, customs and lasting contributions to our island’s history.
While Hougang is well known as a Teochew stronghold, it wasn’t the only one. Few know of another Teochew enclave that once stood along Stephen Lee Road in Mandai – a quiet, jungle-like area in its time. The story of how the community came to settle there is a moving one, filled with resilience and enterprise. Along the way, you’ll hear about the values, quirks and strong sense of kinship that continue to define the Teochew spirit.
As a highlight, we’ll also make a side trip to the Japanese Cemetery at 22 Chuan Hoe Road – a serene, historic resting place rich with stories. Like Bukit Brown, this cemetery offers a rustic, reflective walk through time, where the tales of early Japanese settlers, including the Karayuki-san, unfold amidst peaceful surroundings.
Join us for this immersive morning walk through heartland heritage and hidden history. We’ll begin at Kovan MRT (Exit C, towards Heartland Mall) at 9.00am, and aim to conclude around noon near the junction of Yio Chu Kang Road and Chuan Hoe Road.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, culture lover or simply curious about Singapore’s past, this walk promises an eye-opening glimpse into the lives and legacies of the Teochew pioneers – and a memorable conclusion amid the quiet paths of the Japanese Cemetery.
Come walk with us and see Hougang in a whole new light.
