Deep Purple, The Who, Led Zeppelin. Barbarella, Lost Horizon, and The Pink Pussycat. Ganja, marijuana, LSD. What links them together?
Welcome to the Opium, Passion & Rock ‘n’ Roll Walking Tour! Step into the groovy world of the 1960s, when rock ‘n’ roll ruled and wild times prevailed. Today, we’ll stroll down memory lane, exploring the drug-infused era of the 60s and 70s.
Disco and rock didn’t kick off with Saturday Night Fever. They had already been rockin’ for a while until a higher power decided it was time to call it quits. With that, we lost a vital piece of our performing arts heritage.
In 1973, Cliff Richard was denied entry into Singapore just because of his long locks. It was either chop the hair or head home. And home he went. Even Led Zeppelin, arriving in their private jet, got turned away. Those were the wild years of drugs, passion, and decadence, or so they say.
Your dear Uncle Chris was always a good lad and still is. But even I managed to make it to The Lost Horizon at Shangri-La. Joe Chandran & The Xperiments were utterly mind-blowing.
The sight and sound of Joe and his band were pure unadulterated music. If you could walk out of The Lost Horizon without being mesmerised, you must be devoid of soul. Even Pierre Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister and father of the current-day PM Justin Trudeau, hit the dance floor in 1971 at Spot Spot. But alas, we lost it all.
Even Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” faced near-banning, let alone “Smoke on The Water.” This tour will take us along the entire 2km stretch of Orchard Road.
We’ll relive the history, the glamour, the imperfections, and everything in between. Let’s meet at 9am in Barbarella, Ming Court Hotel, on Saturday, 26th August 2023. Our journey ends at the other side of Orchard Road, where once upon a time, a majestic Butterfly Trail was envisioned.
