TELOK AYER HERITAGE WALK
Sun, 9th Nov 2025
9am to 11.30am

When we think of Singapore’s land reclamation, many assume it began in the modern era – post-1965. But the truth is, Singapore’s transformation started much earlier.

In the 1800s, major land reclamation projects were already underway. Did you know that Raffles Place was once a hill? That very hill was levelled to fill in parts of the Singapore River. Over at today’s Padang, another hill – once known as Scandal Point – was flattened to reinforce the shoreline along Queen Elizabeth Walk.

Our pioneers fondly remember this area by its Hokkien name, “Gor Chang Chew Kar” – which means “beneath the five trees”. And yes, there really were five trees back then.

Telok Ayer, the focus of this heritage walk, was once a coastal road hugging the edge of the sea. It was here that many of our forefathers first stepped onto Singaporean soil. In fact, everything beyond Telok Ayer – including today’s bustling business district – used to be open sea.

On this walk, we’ll explore the original shoreline of Singapore, tracing how the land was reshaped and the streets curved around what was once Telok Ayer. As we walk, we’ll also delve into the careers and struggles of early immigrants – from merchants and craftsmen to labourers and community leaders.

Many brought with them not just trade, but also traditions, beliefs, and values from China and other parts of the region.

This is a story of transformation – not just of land, but of people. Telok Ayer remains one of the most historically rich parts of Singapore, home to old temples, clan associations, and beautifully preserved shophouses that reflect our multicultural heritage.

We meet at Raffles Place MRT, right in front of The Arcade, at 9:00am sharp on Sun, 9th Nov. From there, we’ll trace the curve of the old coastline and uncover the stories that shaped this vibrant enclave. We expect to wrap up by 11:30am.

Come walk with us and discover how Singapore rose – quite literally – from the sea.
