Ang Mo Kio, the 7th masterpiece by HDB, boasts a rich history that sets it apart from other neighbourhoods. Unlike its predecessors, Ang Mo Kio navigated pitfalls with finesse, thanks to HDB’s wealth of experience by then. But the mystery remains – how did “ANG MO KIO” get its name?

Was it the farmland, the villages, or perhaps a nod to tomatoes? Join us as we delve into the intriguing theories, including the possibility of it being linked to an Ang Mo Lang (Caucasian), possibly John Turnbull Thomson.

This fascinating walk takes us through the era of ferocious upgrading programs, pirated VHS tapes, and the cinematic battle between theatres and video rentals. Let’s explore the stories of a bygone era, where cinemas clashed with the burgeoning video industry, leaving both to face defeat.

Our journey concludes at a significant bridge, possibly the inspiration behind Ang Mo Kio’s name. This Kio (Hokkien) bridge, attributed to Ang Mo Lang (Caucasian), may well be connected to John Turnbull Thomson’s contributions to early Singapore.
