BALESTIER & WHAMPOA WALKING TOUR
Sun, 5th Nov 2023
9am to 12pm

Balestier, a burgeoning neighbourhood, is set to shine even brighter with the imminent development of the nearby Mount Pleasant HDB Estate. In the world of ‘happening’ locales, it could soon challenge the likes of Holland Village. The real estate market in Balestier presents an enticing opportunity.

Currently renowned for its delectable Tau Sar Piah, Balestier is a food lover’s haven, boasting an array of dining establishments, each with its unique selling point. Hunger is a foreign concept here.

On the other end of the spectrum lies Whampoa, an area lesser-known to many. Named after the philanthropic Hoo Ah Kay, who imported ice from New England, USA in the mid-1800s, Whampoa offers a fascinating history waiting to be explored.

Join us on a delightful journey from Balestier to Whampoa Hawker Centre. Along the way, we’ll indulge our senses in a visual and culinary feast.

Balestier Road, bearing the name of American Joseph Balestier, a sugar cane enthusiast, was once home to vast sugar cane plantations, complete with the challenges of dealing with tigers in what was once a tiger-infested jungle – an intriguing facet of Singapore’s history.

Did you know that the first air passenger to grace Singapore’s shores was the American millionaire, Mr. Van Lear Black? He touched down at Balestier Plain on 29th June 1927, marking a significant milestone in aviation history.

Let’s rendezvous at Novena MRT at 9am on 5th Nov 2023. After disembarking, make your way to Meeting Point A on the left side upon exiting the MRT. Our journey will culminate at Whampoa Hawker Centre, where I plan to enjoy a meal at the Teochew Beef Noodle stall. A diverse range of dining options awaits you there!
