Join us for an engaging walking tour along South Bridge Road, a key artery in the heart of Chinatown. Although it spans just 1.6 kilometres, this leisurely stroll will immerse you in the rich history and vibrant culture of the area during its heyday.
Discover the diverse career paths that our forefathers navigated in the early years of Singapore. From coolies and rickshaw pullers to gangsters and hawkers, the choices were often fraught with difficulty, akin to selecting between two hard rocks. The role of a policeman was not a popular choice, as they were vastly outnumbered by gangsters, necessitating the involvement of external forces, notably the Sikhs, to maintain law and order.
In a time marked by chaotic immigration, the male population outnumbered women by a staggering 14 to 1. It was only later, when the British recognised the demographic imbalance, that women began to arrive in greater numbers. However, their career options were limited. Many women found themselves in roles such as amahs (servants) or samsui women, while others were tragically drawn into the vice industry, often due to poverty or coercion.
Noble matchmakers played a crucial role in rescuing some girls from the brothel industry, marrying them off to wealthy men, many of whom already had multiple wives.
We will convene at 9:00am at Maxwell MRT Station on Sat, 10th May 2025. Upon exiting the station, please take Exit 2 and meet at street level. You will see the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple directly in front of you.
This tour promises to be a scenic exploration of one of Singapore’s earliest arterial roads in Chinatown. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to delve into the past!
