Prepare for an intriguing twist as we explore the British measures taken to grapple with the Chinese community, where secret societies played a significant role in safeguarding lives — even the ladies of the night sought their protection!

Indeed, Chinatown had its share of social woes, but it also had its golden days. In the 1900s, life improved, thanks to the Peranakans who added color and joy to everyday existence. Singapore has certainly come a long way, but the traces of bygone hardships still linger, waiting to be discovered.
