Join us for an engaging walking tour through the vibrant heart of Yishun, a unique blend of history and modernity. While Yishun may not be the first project by HDB, it has certainly made its mark with the establishment of Northpoint City, the first major shopping mall nestled within a residential estate.
Opened in 1992, Northpoint Shopping Mall has evolved into a bustling hub, undergoing significant expansions and upgrades over the years, including the addition of a multi-screen cinema complex, originally known as Yishun Ten. Today, these landmarks stand as testaments to Yishun’s transformation from farmland and pineapple plantations into a thriving community.
Just a short stroll away lies Chong Pang Village, a charming local marketplace that enhances the area’s appeal. Chong Pang Market is renowned for its vibrancy, attracting visitors from across Singapore. As the village embarks on its own upgrading journey, we invite you to witness the changes that are set to unfold.
We will gather at Yishun MRT Station at 9am on Vesak Day, 12th May 2025. The tour will conclude around 11:30amM to 12:00pm at Chong Pang Village, where you can indulge in a delightful kampong lunch, immersing yourself in the local culinary experience.
Come and explore the rich tapestry of Yishun’s history and culture with us!
Yishun isn’t HDB’s first project. Indeed, it is actually quite a late comer. But Northpoint Shopping Mall is the first major shopping mall built in the heart of a HDB residential estate. Today simply known as Northpoint City, the entire project came with lots of apprehension in 1992. As time has proven, Northpoint Shopping Mall has proven so successful that it has gone through some major extensions, (and upgrading works). There is even a multi-screen cinema complex – first known as Yishun Ten.
Today, both are major landmarks. It is surreal to imagine that Yishun was once part farmland and part pineapple plantation. Chong Pang Village, just a stone-throw away, adds to the charm of a local HDB market place. Chong Pang Market completes the scene with a market so vibrant that visitors come from all over Singapore. Today, Chong Pang Village is also undergoing some major upgrading works. So, the scene is set to change. I invite you to take a walk with me down memory lane.
We meet at Yishun MRT at 9am on the 12th May 2025 (Vesak Day). This tour ends at about 11.30, maybe 12pm at Chong Pang Village just in time for a very real kampong lunch.
