THE COMFORT WOMEN OF SINGAPORE
Sun, 26th Oct 2025
9am to 11.30am

This is a Dark Heritage Tour – one that uncovers a painful chapter of history many would rather forget. Yet, remembering is important.

The term “comfort women” is familiar in countries like South Korea and Japan, but in Singapore, it is seldom spoken of. We learn about the Japanese Occupation, about “Sook Ching” and even the massacres – but the story of comfort women is rarely mentioned. And yet, it happened here too.

From Teo Hong Road to Jalan Jurong Kechil, and even on Pulau Blakang Mati (now Sentosa), women were forced into a system that brought unimaginable suffering.

Most of these women have since passed on. Only a few lived long enough to share their testimonies with the world. Their stories, though difficult to hear, are essential to understanding the realities of war – not just the battles fought, but the human cost endured.

On this walk, we will explore where, how, and why such places operated in Singapore. We will look at what life was like for these women before, during, and after the war.

Our path is guided by research and records, including the work of Professor Kevin Blackburn in his book Comfort Women of Singapore.

Along the way, we will also pay tribute to the late Kim Bok-Dong, a survivor who spoke bravely of her experiences and once lived through this very chapter of Singapore’s history.

The walk will end at Jalan Jurong Kechil, in front of one of the sites that once served as a “comfort house” – a chilling reminder of what happened here.

It may sound sinister – and indeed it was. But by walking these streets, hearing these stories, and acknowledging this past, we ensure that these women are not forgotten.
