The topic of Comfort Women remains largely unspoken in Singapore, yet it is a significant part of history that is openly discussed in countries such as South Korea. While it may seem like a taboo subject here, the reality is that these events occurred in Singapore as well. From Teo Hong Road to Jalan Jurong Kechil, and even in the heart of Orchard Road at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road, the legacy of Comfort Women is intertwined with our local history.
The term “Sook Ching” is well-known and taught in schools, yet the plight of Comfort Women is seldom addressed. In fact, even the tragic events of the “infant massacre” receive more attention, particularly during Battle of Singapore tours. As time passes, the number of surviving Comfort Women diminishes, and it is crucial that we remember and learn from these dark chapters of our past.
Our walking tour will focus on the significant events that took place at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road. We will pay tribute to the late Kim Bok-Dong, who served as a Comfort Woman in Singapore.
Join us at 9am on Sat, 3rd May 2025, at Somerset MRT station. Upon exiting, please turn left and meet near the Citibank ATM. The tour will conclude at one of the former “comfort houses,” where soldiers once sought the company of Comfort Women. While the subject may seem grim, it is essential to confront this history with respect and understanding.
