GEYLANG: A JOURNEY THROUGH HERITAGE & CULTURE
Sun, 19th Nov 2023
9.00am to 12pm

Geylang, a vibrant district in Singapore, carries with it a unique reputation, but there’s so much more to discover beyond its notoriety. Join us as we embark on a morning expedition to unravel Geylang’s rich heritage and cultural tapestry.

Geylang’s roots trace back to the early to mid-1800s, during Singapore’s flourishing trading era. The Malays thrived along the Singapore River, and as commerce blossomed, communities migrated to the Geylang and Kallang areas. These were humble, hardworking people, making a living through farming and fishing.

In 1926, the Ong Sam Leong family inaugurated The New World Amusement Park, followed by the Great World Amusement Park two years later. In 1937, George Lee introduced Happy World at Geylang, ushering in a new era. Today, these echoes of the past blend with the present, coexisting alongside the area’s vibrant food scene, temples, clan associations, and a fusion of architectural styles.

Geylang’s infamous reputation masks the cultural gems that lie beneath its surface. This walk is your chance to delve into the district’s history, admire its architecture, and understand its transformation over the years.

We’ll also explore the red-light district during the morning hours, offering a fresh perspective beyond the flashy nighttime facade.

Join us at Kallang MRT at 9am on Sun, 19th of Nov, 2023, for a unique and eye-opening experience of Geylang. See this district in a new light, one that transcends its stereotypes.
