For many, Geylang is often viewed through the lens of its vibrant yet controversial sex industry. However, this perception overlooks the rich history that once defined the area.
Today, we invite you to join us for a morning walk that highlights Geylang’s more esteemed everyday aspects. We will explore Geylang’s once-respected past and examine the factors that contributed to its current reputation. The area’s history dates back to the early to mid-1800s when Singapore was flourishing as a trading port.
During this time, many Malays made their living from the sea around the Singapore River. As trade flourished, entire communities were relocated from the riverbanks to the Geylang and Kallang areas. Most of these individuals were simple folk, with the Malays primarily settling east of the rivers, while others, such as the Chinese, moved west.
These communities relied on subsistence farming and fishing for their livelihoods. In 1926, Ong Sam Leong and his family established The New World Amusement Park, followed by The Great World Amusement Park two years later. In 1937, George Lee opened Happy World at Geylang, marking a significant shift in the area’s landscape. Despite the changes, the culture, heritage, and history of Geylang remain intact.
To truly appreciate Geylang, one must look beyond its surface. Eateries, temples, clan associations, and a blend of old and modern architecture coexist alongside the sex industry. While the sex industry has become a lucrative business, it is merely one facet of Geylang’s diverse economy.
Join us for a morning walk as we uncover the various mainstream career opportunities available to the residents of Geylang. This is also a chance to experience the red-light district in the morning light, contrasting sharply with its vibrant nighttime allure.
Meet me at 9am at Kallang MRT (at the control station after exiting) on Sat, Jun 7, 2025. Together, we will discover Geylang from a fresh perspective.
