HAWKINS ROAD: A VIETNAMESE BOAT PEOPLE MEMORIAL WALK
Sun, 13th July 2025
9am to 12pm

Most of us think of Vietnam as a great holiday destination – vibrant, scenic, full of adventure. But for those who remember the Vietnam War, especially the baby boomer generation, “Vietnam” also brings back memories of struggle, loss, and resilience.

This special walk honours one of the most poignant chapters in Southeast Asian history – the Vietnamese Boat People. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, thousands fled Vietnam by sea in search of safety. Some of them landed right here in Singapore, at a place called Hawkins Road.

Hawkins Road no longer exists, but its story deserves to be remembered. Between 1975 and 1996, it was home to a refugee camp that became known as one of the most welcoming in the region. Volunteers brought comfort, care, and even joy to the displaced ‒ organising trips to the zoo and visits to nearby Chong Pang Village.

Many of those who passed through Hawkins Road still speak fondly of Singapore. Some even returned years later, choosing to settle here and raise their families.

Join Uncle Chris on a heartfelt journey as we revisit the site where the camp once stood. Together, we’ll walk through the surrounding area, reflect on the stories of courage and survival, and pay tribute to the lives touched by this forgotten chapter of our shared past.

We meet at 9:00am at Sembawang MRT station. From there, we’ll take bus service 856 to the former site of Hawkins Road. The walk will end around 11:30am or 12:00pm at View Road.

This is a walk of remembrance, education, and empathy. It’s a chance to hear stories that may have been overlooked – stories that still matter deeply today.

Note: If you or your family were among the Boat People, we warmly welcome you to join us. Your presence would mean a lot.

Come with open hearts. Walk with us through history.
