The Singapore Chinese population is characterised by three major dialects: Hokkien, Teochew, and Cantonese. This tour will focus on the Teochew community.
Once regarded as one of the more refined groups, one might wonder if that perception still holds true today. Hougang has long been recognised as a Teochew enclave, but it is not the only one. Historical accounts reveal that many Teochews settled in various parts of Singapore.
Another notable enclave was Stephen Lee Road (now defunct), located in the heart of Mandai, which was almost a jungle in its time. The story of how the Teochew community established themselves at Stephen Lee Road is a poignant narrative. It is well-known that the Teochew community has made significant contributions to society. We will explore the advantages of being Teochew, as well as some of their characteristics.
A side trip to the Japanese Cemetery at 22, Chuan Hoe Road is an added bonus. Similar to Bukit Brown Cemetery, the Japanese Cemetery offers a rustic walk filled with old-world charm and a tapestry of bittersweet stories, dating back to the era of Karayuyki-san.
We will meet at Kovan MRT (Exit C towards Heartland Mall) at 9am on Sun, June 8, 2025, and aim to conclude by 12pm at the junction of Yio Chu Kang and Chuan Hoe Roads.
Note: This may be your last opportunity to visit an “ancient” provision shop at Rosyth Road. Mr. Ang of Tee Seng Store has announced his retirement due to health and age, marking the end of an era. Tee Seng Store is Singapore’s last remaining provision shop, with a rich history dating back to 1955.
* It is surreal to see an old-fashioned provision shop situated amidst modern landed property developments!
