This unique and adult-only walking tour takes an honest, unfiltered look at the history and evolution of Singapore’s sex industry – from the early days of colonial rule to the modern digital age.
Note: This is a longer-than-usual tour. Please read carefully before signing up.
We’ll begin our journey at Keong Saik Road, once home to many licensed brothels and now transformed into a trendy lifestyle district. As we walk, we’ll explore how the red-light trade evolved across Japanese Street and eventually moved further out towards Flanders Square.
This tour does more than recount the past – it sheds light on the often marginalised individuals behind the industry. We’ll discuss the contrasts between the professional sex worker and the vulnerable street walker, and how their lives have changed – or not – over time.
Along the way, we’ll learn about:
• How the first shipload of sex workers arrived in Singapore
• The heyday of Singapore’s brothel scene
• Shifting regulations, closures, and the slow return of some establishments
• The impact of technology on sex work today
• A respectful glimpse into lives still lived on the fringe
This is a sensitive subject, handled with care. Our walk will not glorify or exploit – instead, it offers a grounded look at the real people and real stories behind the headlines. It’s also a chance to understand how Singapore has historically managed – and continues to manage – this controversial trade.
We end at Flanders Square, once a well-known red-light district. It’s now home to a Japanese restaurant at 22 Flanders Square – a location with a dark past. In 2008, a well-known sex worker, Coco Ng, was tragically murdered there. Her case remains unsolved.
Meeting Point:
We meet at 9am sharp, at the coffeeshop at the junction of Neil Road and Keong Saik Road. Please bring your MRT card – we’ll be taking the train to Farrer Park station.
Expected end time is around 1pm – 1:30pm. As always, this is a fairly long and intense walking tour, so do consider your comfort and stamina before joining.
