Once upon a time, North Bridge Road was nothing more than dense jungle. It is hard to imagine that this busy street was carved out of almost nowhere. But its creation was inevitable – the European Town at Beach Road was right next door.

Running almost parallel to Beach Road, North Bridge Road became an essential support route. The grand colonial beach houses along Beach Road needed supplies and services, and this new road provided exactly that.

Today, few traces remain of its early beginnings. Without a closer look, the history of North Bridge Road might seem forgotten. Yet Singapore, as a former British colony, has carefully preserved records – the triumphs, the struggles, and everything in between.

On this walk, we will uncover the trials and tribulations of North Bridge Road, from the early 1800s right up to the present day. Along the way, you will hear stories that connect past to present, bringing to life a road that has seen more than most realise.

A Walk Down Memory Lane: This tour is especially meaningful for our “Pioneer Generation”, as we will feature dialect terms once commonly heard along these streets – words like Tua Beh Lor, Beh Chia Lor, Si Beh Lor, Seoh Poh, Tua Poh, Pek Sua Poo, and of course, the classic phrase “Go Stan”. For some, these expressions will spark memories of a very different Singapore.

A Story That Must Be Told: Our walk ends at a poignant site – the very spot where pauper rickshaw puller Low Nong Nong lost his life on 17th Oct 1938. His story reminds us that the history of North Bridge Road is not only about progress and prosperity, but also about the struggles of ordinary people who once lived and worked here.
