Once, “Punggol” was simply the name of the long, winding road that led to the famous seafood haven. For many, it was synonymous with one thing: seafood. But for most baby boomers, the history, culture, and heritage of Punggol were largely overlooked. From humble attap huts to zinc-roofed “sar lee chu” houses, and now, the modern, digital community we see today, Punggol has undergone an incredible transformation.
But did you know that not long ago, Punggol was a vibrant kampung? A place where pig farms, poultry, and vegetable gardens were part of daily life. The “Matilda House,” once an iconic landmark, has also faded into the background. There are forgotten colonial houses and hidden stories that have never been properly documented.
Join me on this journey through time as we rediscover the Punggol of the past, where history, heritage, and memories collide. Together, we’ll walk through the streets and uncover the long-lost beauty of a place most of us have forgotten.
Date & Time: Sat, 21st June 2025, 9am
Meeting Point: Punggol Coast MRT Station, Exit 2. Meet me at Toastbox on the ground floor.
Note: We may include a visit to Coney Island – stay tuned for updates after my research and dry run. And of course, Punggol’s riverfront and digital community are certainly a highlight, but we’ll also explore the stories that have shaped this remarkable area.
A Special Note for Repeat Tour-goers:
