Step back into one of the most turbulent chapters of Singapore’s past. From the 1950s through the mid-1970s, Queenstown and its surroundings were no strangers to crime, vice, and murder. Guns, gangsters, and high drama were all part of the story.
This morning, we’ll walk the very ground where some of the nation’s most notorious cases unfolded. The trail begins on the eve of the 53rd anniversary of the gunfight between the police and Lim Ban Lim – a feared and respected underworld figure. Cornered in Queenstown, he refused to surrender, going down in a hail of bullets.
But Lim Ban Lim was not alone in infamy. Earlier, in 1960, the elusive Oh Kim Kee had captured headlines. Dubbed a “Robin Hood” of the underworld, he repeatedly outwitted the police before meeting his end in a dramatic shoot-out at Sims Avenue. Brothels even closed their doors in mourning – a testament to his reputation for generosity within the underworld.
These were dangerous times. Kidnapping and daylight robberies could almost be considered “careers” for some, and the police had their hands full. Many cases ended in spectacular fashion, others faded quietly into history – unsolved, but not forgotten.
On this trail, we’ll revisit both – the high-profile cases that ended in shoot-outs, and the mysteries that remain unanswered. Who knows? Perhaps together we might even spark fresh curiosity about reopening some of them.
We meet at Queenstown MRT Station, Exit B, at 9am sharp. Look out for me at Taxi Stand F44. Along the way, we’ll travel by train from Commonwealth MRT to Farrer Park MRT, so please bring your MRT card.
The tour will conclude around 1pm (possibly 1.30pm) at 22 Flanders Square – the site of another chilling case: the brutal killing of Coco Ng, whose murderer stabbed her in the chest and remains at large to this day.
This is a long walk, so come prepared with comfortable shoes, water, and an open mind. What you’ll gain is more than just a walk – it’s an immersion into a forgotten world where fact often reads stranger than fiction.
Join us for an unforgettable Sunday morning where Singapore’s darker past comes alive.
