Join us for an enlightening exploration of the history of Karayuki-san and the Japanese prostitutes who once thrived in Singapore. This walking tour delves into the intriguing past, examining the reasons behind their presence and the circumstances that led to their eventual disappearance. While the notion of Japanese brothels may evoke sensational imagery, the reality is far more complex and poignant.
In the early days of Singapore, numerous Japanese brothels operated, yet by the mid-20th century, they had largely vanished. What led to this transformation? Our journey begins with the first waves of Japanese immigrants from Amakusa, Japan, who played a significant role in this chapter of Singapore’s history. Today, little remains to remind us of the Japanese prostitution that once existed here, but their legacy is an essential part of our shared heritage.
Our tour will commence at the original enclave of Japanese brothels located in Chinatown. From there, we will take a train to the Middle Road area, often referred to as “Little Japan.”
Meeting Point: Outram Park MRT (Exit 4, towards Dorsett Hotel)
Start Time: Sun, 9am, 4th May 2025
This tour will conclude in the heart of the former Japanese Red-Light District, providing a unique opportunity to reflect on this fascinating aspect of Singapore’s history. Join us for a memorable experience that combines education with exploration.
